Materials
In the United States, we use wood in the construction of the majority of our homes. Wood is a wonderful material, but it is also 100% biodegradable. If left exposed to the sun, rain, and animals it will eventually rot away. As you can imagine having the wooden frame, which provides structure to your home, rot away on you could have devastating and extremely expensive consequences. This is why we protect our wooden homes with more durable materials including paint, asphalt, plastic, stone and brick, and metal. All of these come together to protect our homes against the elements.
Gutters are an important part of the armor that we build around our homes because they collect the water from the roof and safely deposit it somewhere where it won’t harm the frame or foundation of your home. Being that they are on the outside of the home, gutters are exposed to the elements 100% of the time. This is why we make all our gutters out of high-quality, non-corrosive aluminum and copper, with the majority being made from aluminum.
We use aluminum because it allows us to give a lifetime guarantee on our product. Unlike vinyl and PVC plastic gutters that break down in the sun, or iron gutters which rust away over time, aluminum gutters hold up well year after year. By using stronger materials in our gutters, we reduce the amount of repairs and replacements, save material and cost, and reduce the negative environmental impact that low quality materials can have on the environment.
For those looking for special aesthetic appeal we do offer the option of making the gutters out of copper as well. However, for all other applications we recommend aluminum. It is just that good.
Appearance
Now that we know what you want your gutters made from, the second thing is to pick what they look like. Red Rock Exterior Solutions has a wide variety of colors available in both K style and half round. We can help you find the best color either to match or compliment your fascia. We also have scupper boxes and rain chains available for flat roofs and other specific needs.
When it comes to gutter shape Red Rock Exterior Solutions has two options: the K-style and the half-round style. These are by far the most popular choices of gutter style in use today. The K-style adds a dash of class to any roof while also having a great capacity for water direction, and the half-round style has been in use since the earliest uses of a gutter and goes really well with traditional houses. We offer both in either a 5” or 6” width option.
Seamless gutters look and function better than sectional gutters. With sectioned gutters special care has to be taken at the connecting points to protect against leakage, sagging, and blockage which can develop at the joints and seams. They are less appealing to look at, since the different sections make getting a nice, even slope difficult, and the look and slope can both get worse over time as the sections sag and separate from each other.
With seamless gutters you get the beautiful addition of crisp, straight lines to your home. For visible gutters, especially those with K-Style, you can have gutters that compliment the style of the home. You can also blend seamless gutters into the roof, leaving them basically invisible, while still getting the full benefit of a great gutter system.
Capacity
Picking the right size of gutters is a bit more technical than choosing the material or appearance. Gutters have to be properly sized for the expected rain and snowfall, otherwise they can spill over, leaving water to run or freeze in areas where you don’t want it.
Along with making sure that we have a properly designed and installed gutter system, we also take special care to properly seal any miters and end caps in the gutter design to prevent leaking. We also employ splash guards for steeply pitched roof valleys to direct the rain water into the gutter rather than spilling over the edge in a destructive waterfall effect.
There are two main factors, each with their own set of variables, that need to be taken into consideration to properly calculate the correct gutter size and set up for your roof:
The first factor is the roof itself. Roof slope (pitch), roof area (sq. ft.), size, the roofing material, overhang and general architectural design are all taken into account when fitting the right installation to the right home. Proper leveling, and size of gutters assures maximum drainage and the placement of downspouts is calculated to minimize any potential damage to the foundation.
Determining the pitch and surface area of the total roof in order to calculate both the gutter size (5″ vs 6″) as well as the total number of downspouts. The pitch of the roof helps us calculate the width of the gutter. Since pitched roofs can generate higher current volumes that may overflow and waterfall over the gutter wall, having larger 6″ gutters helps compensate. The size of the roof directly affects the amount of downspouts needed. One downspout can handle roughly 600 sq ft of roof area so simply knowing the square footage of the roof allows us to know pretty easily how many downspouts will be needed.
The second factor is the amount of rain or snow that a given area is expected to have annually. Red Rock Exterior Solutions services locations throughout Washington and Iron Counties, and one thing we love about Southern Utah is how different the climate can be simply by traveling 45-60 minutes in any of the cardinal directions. While forecasting the weather is always going to be a finicky profession, there are tables of data that have been created that show the historical amount of rainfall that different areas have gotten annually over the past several decades. Using these we can get a pretty accurate idea of how much water your gutter system is going to need to handle.
By gathering information about the roof and the local weather, we can begin to calculate what the proper structure for the perfect gutter system will be. While Southern Utah doesn’t get as much rain as other areas, it is known to have sudden, intense storms. Having a gutter system that is designed to handle the worst weather conditions will ensure that your house is always protected.
In high snow areas, heat strips (aka heat tape) can be placed inside the gutter to help eliminate snow build up. For those in high snow areas with metal roofs, installing snow brakes is essential before a gutter can be installed to protect the gutter and the roof.

Cleaning Services
Red Rock Exterior Solutions has four cleaning service options
Quarterly:
We come out every three months to make sure your gutter is properly cleaned and in good working order.
Semi-annual:
Same service as our Quarterly check up, but we do it twice a year instead of four times. This is great for areas with less intense weather.
Check up:
Worried your gutter might be getting clogged or that it is in disrepair? Call us today and schedule a checkup appointment. We will send a professional out to take a look at your gutter system and diagnose any issues that it might currently have, or for which it may be at risk.
Cleanout Service:
Sometimes it doesn’t take a professional to tell that a gutter is having issues. If you know that your gutters are clogged then there is no reason to delay. Call us today and let’s get your gutters cleaned out and ready for the next rainstorm.
For homes with trees and other landscaping that could create clogging issues we recommend our quarterly service. It is the best way to make sure that your gutters stay clear of leaves, bird nests, and other debris. For homes with less greenery, we recommend at least an annual if not a semi-annual clean out to remove the dirt and grime build up.
Leaks, calcium build up, water overflowing past the gutters width (waterfall effect), loose, slipping, rattling or other obvious signs the gutter has moved
Call a gutter repair specialist like Red Rock Exterior Solutions for a free gutter inspection.
Gutter Guard
Gutter Guards are a wonderful addition to any gutter. They provide protection from windblown debris, reducing maintenance costs and preserving the life of the gutter and home. If you want a gutter system that needs minimal cleanouts then we recommend getting Gutter Guard.
